After gaining my PhD in organic chemistry from Leicester University, my career started as a process development chemist in the water treatment industry before progressing to working with hops as natural antibacterial agents in industrial applications.
I was largely responsible for sales and technical support to the sugar industry, but I was also heavily involved in the fermentation industry (bioethanol and yeast production), food (preservation and flavours) and saving the bees (seriously! – Varroa mite treatment). Working in a small company gave opportunities to gain experience in many areas; sales, technical support, production support, Development Chemist and Lab Manager.
Outside of work, my children are swimmers, so my time is largely spent at the pool for their training or competitions. I am heavily involved in running their swim club and I am also a licensed official, I am often seen in white officiating at galas.
I was looking for a new challenge and was attracted to Biocatalysts because they came across as a friendly company that is highly innovative, and customer focused. I was impressed by their capabilities in enzyme discovery, which is very much aimed at realistic commercial development. They are a growing company, with significant investment in the expansion of their manufacturing facility with the opening of a new 11,000 sq ft extension in March, coupled with new state of the art manufacturing and scale up equipment. All very positive to a prospective employee!
The first two months have been a bit of a whirlwind. Biocatalysts has an extensive induction and training programme and there is a lot to learn! That period is coming to an end, everyone has been friendly and supportive. I now look forward to meeting and working with our customers!
