Non Bitter Wheat Gluten Hydrolysate Enzymes Open Up New Markets

With more and more food companies looking to add both health and functional properties to their foods, alternative substrates are being utilised producing a range of benefits and Biocatalysts have 2 new products for this market.

Promod™ 863MDP is a high performance protease designed for extensive hydrolysis of wheat gluten. If you are looking for a smooth non-bitter flavoured hydrolysate containing high levels of free amino acids, then Promod™ 863MDP may be of interest. This enzyme can also be used to produce a degree of hydrolysis of >20%.

Additionally, if it is efficient flavour production that you are looking for then Flavorpro™ 795MDP. This is a protease preparation containing endo-, exopeptidase and glutaminase that can be used to hydrolyse proteins such as wheat and soya. It has been shown to increase solubility and digestibility and create a non-bitter protein hydrolysates with an enhanced flavour. Both new products are suitable for use in kosher and vegetarian applications.

Biocatalysts is always interested in hearing from companies who are working on projects in this area. If you are working on this, or another substrate such as oatbran or pea, we would like to hear from you.

Stuart West MD 25 years service

On the 3rd December 2009, 25 years ago to the day, our Managing Director Stuart West joined Biocatalysts Ltd. He has witnessed good and bad times during this period and has always approached them with positivity and good humour. We say thank you and congratulations, and we look forward to the next 25 years.

Biocatalysts and Novacta Biosystems

Biocatalysts and Novacta Biosystems are proud to announce a collaboration combining their expertise in the development and manufacturing of intracellular enzymes. Together the two companies will provide seamless support to clients for all aspects of enzyme development through to commercialisation.

Novacta Biosystems has extensive expertise in the identification, cloning and expression of enzymes for a wide range of applications.  A thorough understanding of appropriate expression systems and fermentation optimisation enables the development of an enzyme production system tailored to the customer’s requirements.  The process is then transferred to partners Biocatalysts.
Biocatalysts have the efficiency and experience to scale-up from shake flask to capacities exceeding 10,000 litres, in less than 6 months. This allows them to offer their clients greater cost-effectiveness through a shorter time to market. Biocatalysts pride themselves on adding value to every project they undertake by taking the time to understand the client and their projects and objectives. This allows them to offer innovative yet practical solutions. This often results in higher project yields or the development of a more effective process.

Stuart West, Managing Director of Biocatalysts commented “We are delighted to be working together. We look forward to delivering a unique holistic service focussing on the identification, development, optimisation and commercial scale production of speciality intracellular enzymes to our clients. Together we can offer a cost-effective solution that suits your needs.”
Mike Dawson, CSO of Novacta Biosystems commented “This collaboration allows clients to access a professional, integrated and industry focused development team that can meet project requirement in a timely and cost-effective manner.  We look forward to working more closely with Biocatalysts and offering clients a unique end-to-end solution for their needs.”

Recession Success at Biocatalysts

At a time when a number of British institutions, including the 100 year old Woolworths are going under, it is encouraging to know that here in Wales businesses can still thrive. Biocatalysts, a specialist enzyme company based near Cardiff, is flourishing despite the Credit Crunch; last year both sales and profits reached record highs.

The main symptom of the current recession is a plethora of redundancies across an array of industries. However, there are still jobs out there. Rather than shedding staff Biocatalysts plans to recruit up to 7 new employees by the end of summer 2009 within IT, New Product Development and Sales Management.

Sales growth of 21% in quarter 1 of this financial year indicates that Biocatalysts may well achieve another record-breaking year. This success is not down to luck but due to the forward-thinking nature of the company. A focus on customer service and innovation for over 25 years has led to a world-class reputation which allows Biocatalysts to keep on achieving its goals year after year.

Biocatalysts supply enzymes to the Food industry and their benefits include the possibility of increasing yield, improving quality or reducing waste and creating higher value by-products. It would be ill-advised for any food company to ignore the relevance of enzymes in the present economic climate.

If you are interested in using enzymes in your food application or would like to learn more about Biocatalysts please visit their website at www.biocatalysts.com or email enquiries@biocats.com
